CERNET BACKBONE NETWORK
CERNET is the first national Internet backbone network in China and today connects 2000 organizations, with more than 20 million users, and supporting wide range of major national education and research applications. CERNET is important for China’s education modernization, Internet talent training and innovation in a wide range of key digital technologies.
In December 1995, CERNET’s backbone network was first opened, connecting the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Shenyang, Xi'an, Wuhan and Chengdu, at a speed of 64Kbps (DDN).
In 1999, satellite links were established, at speeds of 2Mb/sec-4Mb/sec), to connect an additional 18 provincial capitals of China (including Lhasa in Tibet).
Two years later, CERNET’s backbone was upgraded to 155M-2.5Gbps, connecting 35 provincial capitals and central cities (except Lhasa).
In 2006, bandwidth was further upgraded to 2.5-10Gbps, and 20 additional CERNET high-speed network core nodes were built.
In 2013, the CERNET backbone network with 100Gbps bandwidth was built, providing advanced information infrastructure for higher education and technological innovation.
