The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is the only international, non-governmental and open Internet technology development and standards making organization in the world. Its main task is to be responsible for the research and development of Internet related technical specifications. Currently, most of the international Internet technical standards come from the IETF. Since its establishment in 1986, IETF has become the most influential and authoritative technology organization in the field of Internet. The IETF conference is held three times a year, and technical standards are widely used in today's Internet after being submitted, discussed and confirmed by IETF conference.

The 79th IETF conference was held in Beijing from November 7 to 12, 2010. The meeting was hosted by Tsinghua University, co-hosted by the Internet association of China (ISC) and China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), and staff from CERNET undertook the preparation of the conference. This is the first time that the IETF conference had been held in China. Jining Chen, vice president of Tsinghua University delivered the welcome speech and took the commemorative plaque from Mr. Russ Housley, the chairman of IETF. Famous Internet technology experts, Internet technology founders, scholars and engineering technicians from 52 countries and regions attended the meeting.

At the meeting, IETF established seven new working groups, closed five working groups that had completed their mission, drafted 545 new draft standards, updated 1003 draft standards and issued 124 RFCs.

In recent years, China has actively participated in the development and standardization of Internet technology, especially in the formulation of Internet standards. Tsinghua University, Huawei, China Mobile, CNNIC and other scientific research institutions and enterprises have been widely involved in the formulation of Internet standards. Among them, Tsinghua University's research team composed of a number of CERNET experts has submitted 25 RFC drafts of Internet technology standards to IETF, and many of them have been approved by IETF.  At the 78th Congress held in the Netherlands, Jianping Wu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor of Tsinghua University, and CERNET expert, won the highest honor of the Internet Society, the Jonathan B. Postel Service Award. This is also the first time that a Chinese person has won this award.
