Chinese-American Networking Symposium

1999 - 2017
Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, etc.

In order to strengthen the academic exchange and cooperation between China and the United States in the field of network technology and application, China Education and Research Network (CERNET), China Science and Technology Network (CSTNET) and Chinese Association for Science & Technology (CAST-USA) cooperated in 1998 to host the Chinese-American Networking Symposium (CANS). Since 1999, the symposium has been held in China and the United States every alternate year. The conference invites leaders, experts, scholars and technical personnel from government, education, science and technology agencies, and industry to participate in the meeting. The purpose is to exchange and discuss the development and prospects of computer network technology and applications. The Internet2 Association of the United States has given great support and attention to the success of the conference, and formally became the main organizer of the conference in May 2004. Since 1999, the CANS Conference has been held for 18 sessions.

The technical themes of the first CANS'1999 conference mainly focused on traditional advanced network research and network architecture development issues, as well as more in-depth academic themes such as the latest development of the Internet: open international interconnection centers, the complexity of collaboration and routing issues of international networks, IPv6 research and future development, middleware and alliances, grid technology topics, and electronic science and research cooperation.

CANS'2000 was held in Beijing, China in May 2000. Senior Internet researchers and managers in the United States contacted Chinese industry partners and discussed future cooperation. Internet2 and CERNET Network Center signed a memorandum of understanding on the co-development of next-generation Internet technologies and applications.

CANS'2001 was held in Washington, USA in March 2001. In addition to rich presentations and demonstrations on advanced applications (including high-definition uncompressed video), the most memorable conference event was the "Crab Banquet" with Maryland Blue Crabs.

CANS'2002 was held in Shanghai, China in August 2002. It attracted more participants from the United States and China, and the content covered a wide range of advanced network research. For the first time, the conference introduced remote lectures via advanced networks, and supported video conferences in every meeting room.

CANS'2004 was held in November 2004 at Florida International University in Miami, USA. The meeting focused on the China Next Generation Internet Network (CNGI) and high-performance computing projects, the NSF International Research Network Interconnection (IRNC) project, as well as eScience and digital library applications. The conference organized some special events, including a violin performance through high-definition video: the conductor is in Miami, the performer is in Tsinghua University, and a giant panda video broadcast live from Sichuan.

CANS'2005 was held in Shenzhen, China in November 2005. The topics include advanced network architecture, grid infrastructure, middleware, e-Science and applications.

CANS'2006 was held in Chicago, USA in December 2006, and was jointly held with the American Internet2 Autumn Conference, which also celebrated the tenth anniversary of Internet2. The meeting paid special attention to the grid collaboration working group. The main topic was to improve the more specific cooperation between China and the United States. After the meeting, participants enjoyed a Chicago-style pizza feast together.

CANS'2007 was jointly organized with the 24th APAN (Asia Pacific Advanced Networking Association) Academic Conference in Xi'an, China in August 2007.

CANS'2008 was held in Indianapolis, USA in 2008, and the local organizer was Indiana University.

CANS'2009 was held in Beijing, China, and it summarized the ten years of CANS and discussed the prospects and plans for cooperation in the next ten years.

CANS'2010 was held in Washington, USA, and the organizer was Georgetown University.

CANS'2011 was held in Kunming, China. The organizer was Yunnan University. This was the 12th CANS conference. The theme of the conference was One World, One Network.

CANS'2012 was held in Seattle, USA and hosted by the University of Washington. The theme of the conference was the stability of global terminal-to-terminal network operation, the application and deployment of IPv6, software-defined networking and the future of the Internet.

CANS'2013 conference was held in Hangzhou, China. The conference discussed topics such as advanced network technology development, network campus assistance, and campus information technology management.

CANS'2014 was held at New York University in New York, USA. The conference discussed network deployment, global network infrastructure, mutual assistance in the field of education and research between China and the United States, and future international cooperation in multidisciplinary fields.

CANS'2015 was held in Chengdu, China. The conference focused on the future Internet, SDN, and SDN-supported high-energy physics research demonstrations, network services and application research, and CIO seminars.

CANS'2016 was held in Houston, Texas, and was hosted by Rice University. The topics of the conference included scientific research cooperation, IPv6, end-to-end services, identity authentication and management, global education, and university information management.

CANS'2017 was held at Duke Kunshan University, organized by CSTNET, CERNET, Internet2 and hosted by Duke Kunshan University. The meeting was held in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, China, discussed topics such as the future of the Internet, CIO seminars, network security, global scientific research cooperation, and transnational education.
