Ministry of Education: CERNET Releases Global Academic Resource Sharing Platform

2020-03-09

Recently, CERNET released the global academic resource sharing platform-CARSI, aimed at satisfying a specific scientific research requirement of universities and colleges during COVID-19. Teachers, students and researchers can now conveniently visit more than 140,000 journals, and more than 10,000 kinds of experiments and lecture videos at home and abroad.

In the past, a large number of academic resource databases were based on the campus network IP address for identity authentication. However most teachers and students work and study from home due to COVID-19 making it difficult to easily access academic resources. Based on this urgent need, CERNET Network Center developed and deployed CARSI, so solve this problem.

CERNET Authentication and Resource Sharing Infrastructure-CARSI, is a service organized and managed by CERNET Network Center, initiated and supported by Peking University Computing Center. It provides federal certification and global academic information resource sharing services for universities and scientific research institutions that have established unified identity authentication.

By using CARSI, universities' teachers and students can access resources through campus network account at any time, any place, through any terminal, in any form of networking. Plug-ins, APPs download, campus network IP is not needed for using CARSI system, which can also support teachers and students to directly access  those massive scientific research and academic resources at home and abroad that need identity authentication.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, in order to support the scientific research and E-learning in colleges and universities, under the unified deployment of CERNET Network Center, Peking University and other undertaking units have accelerated the work of CARSI resource coverage, and also actively expanded services to colleges and universities. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 one month ago, the number of colleges and universities with CARSI shared educational and scientific research resources has reached more than 400, an increase of more than 300 over the initial period of the epidemic. In Hubei province, many colleges and universities, including Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, South- Central University for Nationalities, Wuhan Textile University and so on, have officially launched their services. On the basis of foreign academic resources, 13 academic data service providers have signed contracts to provide services to China, including 11 well-known overseas database manufacturers such as Kerui Weian and Elsevier.  Two major Chinese academic resource databases, CNKI and Wanfang, covering 140,000 Chinese and foreign journals, and more than 10,000 experiments and lecture videos can also be accessed. The number of people who have visited academic resources through CARSI has increased rapidly, to over 160,000 visitors per day from the initial 10,000 people per day.

During COVID-19, novel coronavirus vaccine and related specific drug development and international cooperation were effectively supported by CARSI, which has helped experts in biology, chemistry and medicine.
