The project was launched in 2011 with a project period of five years. This was a Sino-US cooperation project co-funded by Chinese Government, the National Foundation of the United States, and Internet2 for the high-speed interconnection of CERNET and the US education and research network. It aimed to provide high quality and high bandwidth information network infrastructure for Sino-US international cooperation in education and scientific research and further Sino-US cooperation in the Internet field.
With the joint support of this project and the National Development and Reform Commission of China, the Sino-U.S. academic network 10G high-speed interconnection was realized through the China Next Generation Internet International Exchange Center CNGI-6IX and the US Next Generation Internet Exchange Center in Los Angeles.
Multiple networks are connected to it, the China Next Generation Internet Trial Network CNGI -CERNET2, CERNET and CSTNET, as well as the United States' next generation Internet important academic networks Internet2, NLR and ESNET.
