Trans Eurasia Information Network (TEIN/Asi@Connect)

In 2004, the European Commission launched the TEIN2 project (2004-2007),The European Commission has supported the governments of Asian developing countries to establish the main nodes of Asia- Europe education and research network in Asia, to provide advanced information infrastructure for science, technology and education cooperation between the two continents. CERNET has participated in the TEIN2 project since 2004.

The internet backbone of TEIN2 project has three main nodes, and two of these three nodes are located in Beijing and Hong Kong. The  Beijing node can directly connect to Europe at 622M. This project has laid a solid foundation for the wider and deeper collaboration in the field of science and technology of Europe and Asia.

Since Tsinghua University has won the bid on three occasionsto undertake the work of TEIN2 internet backbone management and operation (TEIN2/3/4), the operation center located in "Large-scale Network Infrastructure Operational Management and Security Monitoring Center".

TEIN2 involved 9 Asian partners: Australia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. TEIN3 (2007~2011), TEIN4 (2011~2016) and Asi@Connect project (2016~2021) are all follow-up projects of TEIN2.

The current Asi@Connect project involves 24 countries in the Asia Pacific region, the total funding is the sum of TEIN3 and TEIN4. Ms.Jie An, the representative of CERNET, has been serving as the Asi@Connect steering committee chair for three consecutive times since 2016.

At present, the TEIN backbone bandwidth is up to 10G which connects the NRENs of 21 countries and areas in the Asia Pacific region. It also connects to the 50 million European researchers and academics served by the G?ANT network and supports collaborative programmes in areas such as Earth observation, disaster warning, climate research, food security, delivery of E-health and E-learning.
